What is a church duty roster?
A church duty roster (or rota) is the schedule of who is on which duty on which Sunday: welcome, tea and coffee, sound, readings, kids and so on. In the US it is usually called a serving schedule or volunteer rotation.
"Duty roster" and "rota" are the words churches in the UK, Australia and New Zealand most often use for what US churches call a serving schedule or volunteer rotation. Whatever the name, a good church duty roster:
- lists every duty (welcome, tea and coffee, sound, readings, prayers, kids, cleaning) and how many people each one needs;
- is built from people's availability, so nobody is rostered on the weekend they said they would be away;
- shares the load, so the same few names are not on every week;
- is published early, a month or more ahead, with a clear way to swap.
Most small churches start with a spreadsheet or a printed sheet on the noticeboard. That works until people serve on several teams and swaps happen by text. Our free volunteer schedule template is a ready-made duty roster spreadsheet, and the guide to building a serving rotation people don't burn out on covers limits, blockout dates and swaps.
Churchory Sunday builds the roster for you from your teams, volunteers' blockout dates and per-person limits, sends reminders, and routes swap requests to the people who can actually cover.
